First-Time Parent Clinical Guide (0–6 Months)

Complete Newborn Care & Growth Guide

Evidence-based pediatric guidance from Dr. Zahoor Hussain Daraz to help you navigate your baby's first 6 months with confidence.

1. Spotting & Managing Newborn Jaundice

Over 60% of full-term newborns experience mild jaundice during their first week.

What to Look For:

  • Yellowing starts on the face/whites of eyes and moves down toward chest and abdomen.
  • Press gently on baby's forehead under natural sunlight to check skin undertone.
  • Frequent breastfeeding (8-12 times daily) helps flush out bilirubin through stool.

When to Get Bilirubin Tested:

Seek immediate evaluation if yellowing reaches the legs/soles, if baby is abnormally sleepy or difficult to wake for feeds, or if jaundice appears within the first 24 hours of birth.

2. Umbilical Cord Stump & Skin Care

The cord stump usually falls off naturally between 7 and 21 days after birth.

Keep Cord Clean & Dry

Fold the front of the diaper down below the stump so it stays exposed to air and away from urine.

Sponge Baths Only

Give warm sponge baths until the stump falls off completely. Avoid submerging baby in a bath tub.

No Antiseptics or Powders

Do not apply alcohol, kajal, oils, or mustard oil to the cord. Allow natural dry healing.

3. Safe Sleep Rules (Preventing SIDS)

Essential guidelines to ensure your infant sleeps safely night and day.

Back to Sleep Always

Place your baby on their back for every sleep. Never on their stomach or side.

Clear Sleep Surface

Use a firm mattress. Keep pillows, heavy blankets, stuffed toys, and bumpers out of the crib.

Room-Sharing, Not Bed-Sharing

Keep baby's crib in your room close to your bed for the first 6 months.

Prevent Overheating

Dress baby in light layers. If the room is comfortable for an adult, it is comfortable for baby.
